After observing the distribution of the hard copy of the book to Australia, Canada, England and Germany it is very gratifying to have the book accommodated in this mode as well. 6 DEDICATION On April 30, 1983 I attended the world's largest gathering of Gay men under one roof. It was a benefit for the Gay Men's Health Crises, performed by the Barnum And Bailey Ringling Brothers Circus at Madison Square Garden. I was in New York to work and live with Alan Noseworthy III, who was on the board of the AIDS Resource Center. Allan and I became "lovers" of a sort. He followed me to Palm Springs in November of 1983 where he and I began a life together. In May of 1984 Allan was diagnosed as having Kaposi's Sarcoma. He died of pneumocystis on June 21, 1984. We had practiced "sensible sex", not only with ourselves, but with others. Allan and I got into sensible sex activity through a course from the American Red Cross in which we learned about basic hygiene in the care of People With AIDS. Secondarily, I read in a pamphlet put out by Michael Callan and Richard Berkowitz,"How To Have Sex In An Epidemic"1. This was the foundation, but with the imagination of Allan and myself, we expanded our methods into low risk, satisfying sexual encounters which we termed "sensible sex". Many of the sexual acts in the following essay were developed by Allan and myself in our needs. I feel I owe my life to sensible sex and the resolve that Allan and I had to practice what we then called "safe sex". Had Allan known earlier about disease prevention he could have been here to help write this book. I dedicate this book to my hero, Allan Noseworthy III. PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION There has been new information that needs to be addressed before reading the following. The second edition remains substantially the same as the first edition with a few of the subjects placed in a different perspective necessitated by this information. In the beginning of the AIDS epidemic we were advised by the educational literature to "be selective, know your partners, try monogamy, and 'avoid' fluid exchanges".#4 Instead of stopping La Rouche maybe we should "avoid" La Rouche.#5 In 1986 the San Francisco Department of Health still hands out a brochure prepared by the AIDS Health Project, dated 7-23-85, with this same advice. IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 7 On October 20, 1986 The San Francisco Chronicle ran an article about a military training video oriented towards the heterosexual soldier who got AIDS from a prostitute. The "thrust" of the video is that knowing ones partner will save one from infection. This video is a real killer. In November of 1985 Jim Foster, a Gay member of the San Francisco Health commission stated: "You have two monogamous lovers, and they assume that will protect them because they're not going out to the baths. But let's say one is positive, all they're doing is re-infecting each other, if they're not engaging in safe sex. And that is very dangerous." 2 Unless a couple have had a negative response to the AIDS antibody test, twice in a six month period, prior to engaging in unsafe sex there is a very good chance, indeed, that couple could be infecting and re-infecting themselves. Being selective, knowing your partners, being monogamous, and engaging in unsafe practices can be very risky. Dean Echenberg, San Francisco's top AIDS official, states: "50% of the Gay men in San Francisco are infected. Well you are facing the same risk today with two contacts as you were five years ago with 50 contacts." 3 It is plain to see that#4 "the guidelines"#5 have been ineffective. In a visit to San Francisco in April of 1985 Dr. Gallo was reported in the San Francisco Chronicle to have estimated that 50% of those infected will go on to have an AIDS or ARC condition. These statistics show that 25% of the Gay population in San Francisco now has an undiagnosed case of AIDS/ARC. There is even more scary news. "Remarkably two of the 18 subjects had evidence for infection with at least#4 two viral genotypes (italics are mine)..#5.we should be counselling persons...to follow guidelines...as they may become super-infected." 4 What this means is that people are being re-infected time and time again despite#4 "the guidelines".#5 One need only have unsafe sex with one person to be infected with the infection of several, or more infected persons. With this information we realize that the advice of six years ago is no longer relevant; that, in fact,#4 the guidelines have been killing people.#5 WE MUST AT ALL TIMES PLAY SENSIBLY NOT 9 TIMES IN 10, BUT 10 TIMES IN 10 # 8 The straight and Gay presses are still using#4 "the guidelines"#5 we Gays have used for 6 years. If these guidelines are continued all communities will be inundated and devastated. In a fairly enlightened article, it mentioned fisting among other sex practices, "How to Avoid AIDS" 5, we receive the following information: "No casual sex ever again. Wait until you know the other person. Know whether he's had a homosexual experience in the past eight years...This is a great time to practice sexual monogamy". 6 These guidelines written for heterosexual women are very foolhardy not to demand the wearing of a condom and the use of a nonoxynol 9 virucide with every contact, including the monogamous contact. When discussing sex many people will not reveal with exactitude what sexual practices turn them on, therefore it is only prudent to assume that you and he or she is infected and take precautions. We have several wonderful tools that we are not using to prevent AIDS, the most important of which is our own good common sense. The others are the antibody test and prophylactics such as condoms and nonoxynol 9. We have not been advised to use these tools because of the intolerance of a few Bible thumpers towards people who enjoy the "pursuit of demons", or as it is better known, promiscuity. These few have routinely influenced law makers to pass laws similar to the following: 666.17 PROPHYLACTIC DEVICES (a) No person shall knowingly sell, display or advertise for sale any article which may be used for the prevention of conception and/or venereal disease, nor shall any person knowingly display any machine or device for the dispensing of such articles. Nothing contained in this section shall affect practitioners of medicine or druggists in their legitimate business.(Ord. 557-1960. passed 7-29-60) Whoever violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor of the third degree. Punishment shall be as provided in section 698.02. Buck Harris of the Ohio Department of Health handed me a copy of this ordinance in October of 1985. I was on a five day tour of Ohio with my sex hygiene seminar. I went to Toledo, IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 9 Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton. This law is on the books of Akron, Ohio. Akron is the corporate headquarters of Goodrich and Goodyear who, co-incidentally, make 90% of the world's supply of condoms. Notice also that the number of the statute is "666", a symbol used in the Catholic Bible to denote Satanism. In a few words, religious nuts and their cohorts are killing us. These few people's inordinate zeal is wielding a death weapon to force everybody to become moral persons. A condom will save us. Unless we remain alive to fight the Falwells and La Rouches, to pull down the politicians and the laws, we are lost anyway. We must identify our enemies, see the reasons behind their madness and annihilate them. Conquering AIDS is only half of the battle. AIDS is the ammunition these people use. The San Francisco Police Department on orders from on high prosecutes prostitutes with condom possession as evidence of prostitution. The possession of hypodermic needles is a felony. Condoms and clean hypodermic needles stop the spread of AIDS. An aggressive enforcement of these laws is killing people. In 1986 Diane Feinstein declared San Francisco a sanctuary for political refugees. In other words, she asked the San Francisco Police Department not to enforce Federal and State laws concerning political refugees. She could do the same thing concerning condoms and hypodermic needles. Pharmacies and the police would simply not enforce these two laws. What I like to call "THE UNUSED POINT" is that the taxpayers of the City and County of San Francisco have to pay for the $100,000 visits each Person With AIDS makes to the hospital. To not enforce these laws saves the taxpayers this money but also the monies that it takes to enforce, prosecute, and jail these people. All politicians, and many civil service workers take an oath to serve and to protect those who have been put into their care, including those people which prejudice has made repugnant to the "norm". Diane Feinstein, to her credit has lived up to her oath only from a financial standpoint. Her repugnance to the Gay Life as shown by her closing of the baths has violated her oath. Her refusal to dispense clean needles has violted her oath. Her refusal to implement sex hygiene education in the city school system has violated her oath. Many people have died from her inaction. Where are the impeachment proceedings? With the use of our technology and our knowledge this # 10 disease is preventable. Our scientists are proving that the disease is transmitted from blood to blood exchange and semen to blood exchange in anal intercourse.7 Intravenous drug users, homosexual men and bisexual men, all women (except lesbians), prostitutes and straight men are at risk in that descending order; IV drug users at high risk and straight men at very low risk. "There will soon be recognition that persons frequenting prostitutes, as well as the prostitutes themselves, are 'high risk' groups and the female to male transmission may occur."8 It is simply a matter of time until all segments of society all over the world become infected; unless the virus transmission is interrupted. STOP FLUID EXCHANGES NOW To complicate matters more the immune suppressed are more likely to become infected than those who are healthy. We are finding a large population of immune suppressed people in the United States, and elsewhere. The Listeria monocytogenes deaths in Los Angeles in the summer of 1985, 9 the watermelon poisoned deaths in California that same summer, the AIDS infections in the newborn and pregnant, the "Mystery Illness That Baffles Experts" in San Francisco,10 the "Stein Flu,"11 "The New American Nightmare",12 the AIDS infections in Africa, Haiti, and Bel Glade, Florida, all point in the same direction. There is something radically wrong in our health care because of poor hygiene and poor nutrition. On top of that is our high technology which pollutes the air, the water and the workplace in which we live. These things coupled with mass produced low nutrition foods and medical technology which prescribes, cuts and snips are draining our immune systems. For example, the foreskin is integral protection to an opening of the body in which invaders can enter the body. The foreskin is routinely snipped at birth for #4"health". #5 The correlations of the incidents cited above must not go unnoticed. For the people who test antibody negative the first two parts of this book will keep you negative. For the people who test antibody positive and the people who have AIDS/ARC the first IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 11 two parts of this book will stop the spread of the AIDS in- fection. The third part of this book deals with nutrition and alternative therapies. For the most part these are guinea pig therapies that are not condoned by government or medical author- ities. It must be noted that government and medical authorities cannot point to one cure. The alternative therapies can point to dozens of cures. In the end, when all is said and done, there is only room for one in a coffin. In other words it is an individ- ual's responsibility to make his own informed decisions. The original intention of this book was to be a manual for sex hygiene. In the years intervening the beginning of this book and this the second edition the material overdeveloped the original intent. I have become deeply involved in the eradication of this terror known as AIDS. I have met many of the principal players in the AIDS scenario. Dr. Gottlieb of UCLA, DR. Conant of UCSF, Dr. Sonnenbend of New York, Michael Callen and Richard Berkowitz of New York, Bobby Reynolds of San Francisco, Louise Hay of Los Angeles, Louis Nassany of Los Angeles, Hal Frank of San Diego and many many more. Its impossible to acknowledge them all because there are so many who are so deeply concerned about this disease. All of them in one way or another contributed to the thinking that went into this book. Phsiologically and Pschologically we have this disease whipped. AIDS, the viral infection, and AIDS, the final resolution is not quite the deadly, casket thing we have been led to believe. AIDS, the infection, is totally preventable and was the original intent of the book. The first edition reflects that intent. AIDS, the final resolution, is not totally preventable but there is good reason to suspect that long healthy living can be attained by some, hopefully many. And that is the intention of this, the second edition. Because of the physical limits of book writing this book will never be complete. It is a digest meant to get the thinking processes into gear. With the inclusion of the above the book is now complete for the second edition. AIDS/ UNTIL A CURE PREVENTION 13 # 12 NULLIS IN VERBA (Take Nobody's Word For It; See for yourself.) IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 13 PART I: "THE PHILOSOPHY OF SENSIBLE SEX" "WE ALL HAVE AIDS" HAL FRANK, July 1984 "LOVE AND HEALING WORKSHOP" Wildwood Ranch, Guerneville, California AIDS is all inclusive in our community if not a physical reality, most certainly a mental reality. We are all affected. # 14 "THE CIVILIZED , THEY ARE THE FIRST TO DIE."14 From the beginning of the epidemic, sex has had a bad name. The sexual liberationists of the Gay movement are almost all gone. They were the first to die, hence the quote from Sophie's Choice. All of my very good best friends are "on the other side". These people were sex positive in their outlook. The disease caught them before they knew there was a trap. Today there are those who feel celibacy is the only answer. Sex negativity is the normal response from almost everyone. From the different AIDS Foundations across the country, from the politicians, from the person on the street, from the "fundies" #4("Fundies" are the fundamentalist members of protestant churches led by Jerry Falwell and others of his ilk)#5, even from my family, sex negativity is ruling our passions. We are told what we cannot do. The point of view of this book is sex positive. Under the right conditions many of the sex acts we were used to in the past can be done today with little or no risk concerning the transmission of disease. With the onset of AIDS the Gay community has grouped together in several ways to combat the disease. JO BUDDIES, THE 15 ASSOCIATION, and other ads in newspapers on telephone poles and other places are proliferating the sexual scenes. Several examples are on the opposite page. TRIBAL CEREMONIES Urban tribal ceremonies are beginning to dominate the social arenas of modern cities. The need for safe, clean sex, the need for multiple sex partners, has brought the vanguard of a new sexuality. In many cultures throughout history, specifically in New Guinea, young men entered adulthood by leaving their childhood living quarters and entering the men's quarters where the acolytes were taught the skills necessary to take their place with the other men of the tribe. They were taught by their elders to become superior men. In many tribes this involved intimate contact with semen. Many of the customs and ceremonies have become history as modern civilizations have encroached into their primitive worlds. Because of AIDS and the instinctual need for men to be men among men, many of the men, in today's urban jungles, are IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 15 celebrating the new sexuality in increasing numbers. Groups of men like the New York Jacks, the San Francisco Jacks, et. al., are well organized tribes of activists with minimal rules. There are other groups who are into bondage, or S/M, or use cock pumps, etc.. These groups are, in the words of the San Francisco Jacks by-laws, meetings of men "who wish their primary sexual outlet to be...in the company of like minded men." In the recent past the modern man's world felt this primitive need to band together. Perhaps a call of the wild, to participate in group male sexual activity. The orgy rooms of the bath houses were filled with celebrants where eventually diseases intruded to make the celebrants very ill and now have become deadly. One of the most interesting new tribes is very high tech. It takes a computer and a modem (a device used with the telephone to interconnect computers). It is also ultra safe sex. In San Francisco you can hook into "ROUGH AND READY 864-6535", "DADDY'S 769-0918", "T-ROOM 993-5410", or, for those who want to "get off" by simply being the bitch that they are, there is "ALL MY MODEMS 864-1522". Hook in. Turn on. "Get off". In 1986, many men are banding together in tribes in which all sexual activity by the tribe members stays in the tribe. Initiates are given instructions in methods of disease interruption. Sensible sex, the use of condoms, microbicide, virucide, and other techniques, are practiced by all the members. The following is an instructional manual for an initiate to learn the ways of the tribe. A tribal member can be identified by the white hankie next to the hankie of his favorite color. He also carries a knowing smile on his face. IN THE HEAT OF PASSION The sex drive is second only to survival in importance in our lives. Sexual prowess, hunger for acceptance, the search for love, and sexually compulsive behavior, all created a heat in us that can circumvent all the parameters of good common sense. In the heat of passion we do things, fearful things, that place us at very high risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease. Good common sense goes flying out the window in the passions and ecstacies of the moment. Since 1983, I have travelled around the country trying to ascertain the cause and prevention of AIDS. I have read articles in the Gay and straight press as well as articles in medical journals. I have learned that there may or may not be a vaccination in the years to come. I also learned that AIDS and # 16 all other sexually transmitted diseases are preventable. In any and all sex acts there is a risk of disease. Many sexually transmitted diseases are epidemic world wide. With AIDS now in the spectrum, its very scary. The #4Zen Buddhist#5 knows that in the measure of all things, it's not#4 how far, how fast, nor how high one goes,#5 in climbing a mountain, for instance, but "how well" one accomplishes the task. Many of us, especially those of us in our thirties and older, have a certain nostalgia for the days gone by. The days of the past when sexual liberty never involved more than an occasional dose of the clap, the nights of darkness in orgy rooms where anything and everything did happen. They were the crazy nights of sex, drugs and rock and roll. The old ways are past. It's time to bury the dead and get on with the living and the loving. Twilight comes at dawn as well as at dusk. I say this for those who feel that it's the dusk, the night, the end. I feel it's the dawning of a new age. DAWNING OF A NEW AGE The future of us all, and for sexual liberty, can be health, peace and love. Liberty literally means "freedom from restrict- ions". Zen and sexual liberty go hand in hand. "How well" we perform the sex act will set us free of disease. "How well" will give us the liberty we have always sought. We children of Gay and sexual liberation are going to grow up, be responsible, and face reality, whether we like it or not. I have an example of how simple the "how" of sex can lead to disease. Thirty million Americans have herpes. If these people had turned on the lights and had scrutinized their sex partner's body, if they had used a prophylactic, if they had washed with a microbicide before and after sex, their exposure to the herpes virus could have been eliminated. A simple thing like a light switch, a rubber, or bathing could have saved years of misery for themselves and freedom from contagion for numerous others. The path of disease transmission can be avoided. I don't like the term "safe sex". The scientists say that the only safe sex is masturbation; anything beyond is merely possibly safe, or just downright unsafe. I feel we can use the term "sensible sex", which means good common sense. Sensible sex takes those high risk activities out of the high risk category and brings them into the low risk category. It must be remembered that low risk is still a risk. IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 17 There has been much grief and sorrow caused by the specter of AIDS. In order to understand what sensible sex is we must discuss AIDS, and the transmission of disease. "In general, disease transmission requires a vehicle carrying a significant number of germs into a susceptible person." 15 Specific to AIDS, we don't know the vehicle (mucous in this instance) that is carrying the virus. Saliva, urine, blood, semen, ear wax, feces, tears, sweat, any or all could be the vehicle. It is certain that semen and blood are vehicles. Saliva, because it has microscopic amounts of blood, may be a vehicle but has yet to be proven. Antibody positive persons who are thinking that kissing is OK are deceiving themselves. Saliva may also contain other viral diseases. One, cytomegalovirus for instance, can cause mononucleosis, The Kissing Disease, and is thought to be a co-factor with the LAV virus to bring on the condition known as Aids. Cytomegalovirus and Epstein Barr virus have been implicated in the "Stein Flu" and the "Mystery Illness" mentioned in the Introduction. Both are transmitted in a single kiss if one of the persons is infected. The other mucous is merely speculation. A significant number of germs could mean microscopic amounts as well as a bucketful. Many factors, too numerous to mention here, determine how much is enough. since this discussion is about sensible sex we will not discuss, except where necessary, any other areas. Celibacy is one way to interrupt the transmission of disease. Since for many this is not a viable alternative, not having mucous exchanges is another option. For example, mutual masturbation and frottage is "safe", according to the scientists, but anything beyond this is "possibly safe". About 12 years ago I had a friend who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. He lived. Thus it can be said that jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge is possibly safe? Is this to say "POSSIBLY NOT SAFE" as well? I think so. There are risks, for any "body" for anything beyond masturbation, even though precautions have been taken. The responsibility for sexual disease transmission is with the individual. It is the individuals' responsibility to protect themselves. The only person responsible for a dripping cock is the person with the dripping cock. Precautions could have been taken. The exception is the people who contracted AIDS who didn't know that AIDS was in the spectrum of sexually transmitted # 18 diseases when they contracted AIDS. I believe it is necessary to hand some of the responsibility to our society's antiquated thinking about morality. Sexually transmitted diseases require the health departments of all government agencies to purvey correct information at all educational levels. Most sadly, we are at the mercy of only a few bigots who control policy and by politicians who have no balls. I was present at the San Francisco Human Rights Commission meeting in the spring of 1986, to hear a Mrs. Stone plead for sex hygiene education in schools. Her 19 year old son had recently died of AIDS. We teach children how to vote and yet they can't vote till they are eighteen. We can't give them sex hygiene information that might save their life because it lends acceptance to premature sex. Mrs. Stone's son, though fully educated on "how" to vote, never got the chance to vote. Sensible sex is more than simply non-mucous sex. It also encompasses more than a way to get one's rocks off without mucous contact. The only limit to sensible sex is the imagination. Imagination, fantasy, patience, timing, planning and any number of other things can blend to make a satisfying, caring, sexual encounter without the sterility that is symbolized by "safe sex". Many of the sex acts in the following discussion were developed from experience and imagination. My partners taught me a lot, and with the passage of time they have been improved upon. For instance, I first tried ball fucking about 12 years ago. It was an excruciating experience. Those moving and slippery globes were unmanageable and almost impossible to get into a tight hole. Eight years later I found a ball stretcher that enabled me to have more control over those slippery globes, and as well, I'm not quite so anal retentive these days. Ball fucking has become one of my more favorite activities. There is no mucous contact with ball fucking. Berkeley's radio station KPFA went off the air for 45 minutes when I was asked about a "safe sex" method. I replied: "Well there is testicular fornication. "What's that?" The moderator asked. "Ball Fucking" I replied. Z A A A P P P P. They told me it was a power failure. They didn't really IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 19 censor me. They censored the audience. There are many more methods of interrupting the transmission of disease and to still have a satisfying sex life. Use imagi- nation and be inventive. Use your disposable income and be creative. Explore the ethereal side of disease interruptus. HEALTH AND HYGIENE A good healthy body that has plenty of good nutrition, rest and vitamins, stands a good chance of remaining that way. Many of us have been infected with the AIDS virus. I use the word, infected, because the word, exposed, pussyfoots. It makes nice that which is difficult to contemplate. Many of those infected will progress to ARC/AIDS. The feeling that co-factors play an important role in AIDS is becoming more acceptable. A co-factor can be anything from a genetic disposition for contracting diseases to working 18 hours a day for that Mercedes, from amoebas and other viral infections such as Epstein-Bar virus and cytomegalovirus to yeast infections. It is imperative that we do everything to remain healthy, to stop unhealthy habits, and then to get on with our lives. Health for the most part, is in the mind. What we do, what we create in our lives gives us the measure of our health. A healthy body cannot withstand the onslaught of unhealthy activ- ities. But by interrupting the transmission of disease there is no reason why we can't lead long, healthy lives. In creating health in our bodies, I suggest we use nature's gifts, the aloe vera plant #4(sold in quart bottles in your local vitamin store, refer to Part III of this book),#5 vitamins #4(Vitamins E, C, and alanine have been shown in vitro to kill the Aids virus #516), good healthy and nutritious foods are available to us. Rest and plenty of it helps the immune system to respond. Stress reduction in our work, in our family and daily lives can do nothing but good. Exercise, whether it be jogging, a gym, or aerobics on TV, and even a good long session of sex is a must for a healthy body and a healthy mind. We must train our bodies and our minds to be AIDS PREVENTATIVE: IF WE HAVE NOT BEEN ANTIBODY TESTED WE MUST ASSUME THAT WE HAVE BEEN INFECTED AND MUST NOT WAIT FOR THE FIRST SYMPTOMS TO APPEAR BEFORE WE START TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. WE MUST BEGIN NOW TO MAKE OURSELVES AS HEALTHY AS POSSIBLE. Many Gay leaders are telling people not to take the AIDS antibody test as it may threaten civil rights. I say take the test. Take it now. As with cancer the sooner we are aware of a possible health threat the sooner we can begin to make ourselves well and the more likely we will be to survive the infection. For those who are antibody positive, or who suspects, they may be antibody positive PART III of this book is of special importance. # 20 Ever since my first health emergency caused by a sexually transmitted disease, hepatitis, I have read my bodily functions. My stool, urine, saliva, semen and eyes have undergone extensive scrutiny to see if anything was amiss. #4Pasty white, diarrhea, or bloody stool are dangerous conditions. Thin, watery, grey semen is indicative of the body undergoing tremendous illness. See a urologist immediately. Dark or bloody urine is cause for alarm. Yellow eyes or strange looking flakes may mean a very unhealthy condition.#5 We must investigate our health. Be our own doctors for this wonderful creation that sensuously moves us about the planet; this body beautiful, wild and animal, which gives us life and sexual fulfillment. Our bodies are our residence while here. We must use it well. PERSONAL HYGIENE Every sex act, to reduce risk, should begin with proper hygiene. Scrub all bodies intensely with a microbicide such as Betadine or Hebiclens. These are brand names of microbiocides that health care personnel use when scrubbing up for surgery (refer to Part III). It must be noted that there is a caution with Hebiclens concerning the eyes and ears. Medical authorities have noted that washing with simply water is the same as not washing. Washing with a soap, be it a microbicide or Ivory, is the only way to destroy germs. Bars of soap, such as Irish spring or Dial, are worse than nothing because bars of soap are shared. Also bars of soap sit in warm moist areas and the soap itself becomes a culture plate, a source of nutrition for germs. Everyone has experienced the dish rag left for several days with soap in it. The rag becomes sour. The sourness was caused by germs eating the soap. Soap merely loosens oils and dirts which germs adhere to. Rinsing the soap rinses the loosened oils, dirts and germs and flushes them away. With risk reduction nothing should be shared including bars of soap. Most soaps can be found in disposable dispenser bottles. Buy these dispenser bottles and throw the bars of soap away. The body scrub should begin with the head and proceed to the crotch area. The feet and legs are next with the sex organs last. The penis and anus are places where the body excretes wastes as well as being sex organs. It is necessary that this area be last to be cleaned otherwise body wastes can be spread to other parts of the body. Use plenty of microbicide and scrub the sex organs, penis and anus, or clitoris and anus, thoroughly then IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 21 wash the hands including the filed and trimmed nails. Long and dirty nails cause trauma and infection when engaged in sex play. It is homicidal and suicidal to not trim nails or to consider the use of finger cots (doctors use them in anal exams) or surgeons gloves. These items can be picked up at your local drug store. Beautician supply houses also have gloves for coloring hair that are a little more form fitting and a little less expensive, about four cents apiece. One brand is called "Sensi Tuff". Some gay toy stores sell them for about a dollar apiece. If there is to be a douche, then douching should be the first priority when doing the scrub. Make sure that you wash your hands before going into the body scrub. Douching should be the last thing before the sex act and the first thing after the sex act. Use your imagination and turn the body scrub into foreplay. If you are going to expose yourself to the fauna and flora of that person you really should make sure that they are clean. It can be a lot of fun and stimulating. I first learned how to do a body scrub, as mentioned above, from the American Red Cross. I was one of twenty in the first program by the Red Cross in New York City in June of 1983. In retrospect I think it strange that a man can be 42 years old before his first instruction in the correct way to wash his own body. My parents felt the human body was dirty and never talked about it. My schools told me how to clean my teeth but not how to clean my body. If the private sector and the public sector won't involve themselves in this area I should think the business sector, Procter and Gamble for instance, would want to do so if for no other reason than to sell more soap. Its good business to have a clean body. If there is to be no ass play at all a douche is not necessary. A simple body scrub will do. If the person you are with has amoebas, or any other disease of the intestinal tract, a douche should not be attempted. In fact, he should have a piece of gaffers tape slapped over his hole to insure that those parasites remain his, and then a thorough scrub to insure that those parasites adhering to the skin and hair around the anus are gone. Leg hair that is clipped short will further insure against infection. Honesty and trust are integral to a relationship of any kind or duration and health matters should have been discussed before the encounter begins. A communicable disease is usually known to the person who has the disease. With precautions taken most paths of contagion can be interrupted. # 22 If there is to be ass play then a douche is necessary. For a douche to be effective a little knowledge of the physiological, psychological, anatomy of the ass hole before going further. The anal opening is actually one muscle, a sphincter. The sphincter muscle is attached to a series of muscles called the perineum. The perineum muscles begin at the anal opening and continue to the base of the cock and it is these muscles which pump the blood into the cock and make it hard. The perineum muscles also pump semen from the prostate gland. These muscles in and around the anus are as important to the sex act as the cock is in orgasm. Ass play is therefore very much a part of Gay sex play. These muscles, since birth, have been trained for elimi- nation only. It is called "potty training". Many of the pleasurable feelings associated with sex and elimination were discouraged with a slap by one adult or another until even the memory of such pleasure is gone or has been replaced by the slap. The roots of S/M possibly. The point is that the delight of the new born in learning to control muscles has been exchanged for pain. Potty training stultifies growth and learning concerning the sexual organs and their attendant muscles. As a result elimination has become as automatic as breathing. The muscles do it with little or no control from the mind. For many of us the re-learning of the use of these muscles comes back to us when we become involved in anal intercourse. The mind control of these muscles can make an anal exam by a doctor near to impossible with some people whereas others, using mind control, can open up to admit an arm all the way to the shoulder. To not clean the anus prior to sex is dangerous. At the same time, a thoroughly clean anus has no protective bacteria, it has no mucous, to lubricate and protect. There are several brands of microbicidal douches on the market. Their recommendation is that it be used only several times a week. the elimination of the mucous and the germs can cause bowel upset and more it could be harsh to the internal membrane. It is ideal to douche two to three hours before the final scrub outlined above. This timing allows the protective bacteria and mucous to return. To reduce the effects of over douching, harsh douching with microbicide, or by following the stupid recommendations of amateurs like "Humongous Donovan" who recommends douching with IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 23 hydrogen peroxide, or, for the simple reason that it is a healthy activity, after the final douche I use an oral syringe (used by mothers on infants who don't like liquid medicines) to squirt Aloe vera Gel into the anal cavity. The Aloe Vera Gel gives a protective coating, it is anaesthetic, and it has a healing quality. "Humongous Donavan" admittedly continues to fuck without condoms #4because he is a top and not at risk: "I've had trouble with condoms.....I can't find them big enough, and they break" #517. Evidently he hasn't found them because he never looked, refer to the chapter on condoms. Tops and bottoms are at risk. Hydrogen Peroxide is not for internal use and is dangerous to douche with. After sex a rinsing douche may be necessary, but not a high colonic. Another squirt of Aloe Vera Gel completes the ass play. It must be noted that the opinion of the medical community sees nothing good or bad about Aloe Vera. I personally feel that Aloe Vera would be better recognized except that it does heal, it does anesthetizes, it does gives a protective coating, as well it can be grown on a window sill and therefore self-doctoring is simple and easy. The profit motive of the medical community won't allow for self-doctoring. Spread over the skin are follicles of hair, some are almost microscopic, while others are in heavier concentrations around the cock and balls, armpits, face and head. Hair tends to trap germs that can then be transferred to other people. Also cock rings can pull hair and cause discomfort. It is my choice, but also I believe it to be prudent, to keep myself as germ free as possible so I use a barber's hair clipper to clip short all my body hair. Every three months, on the solstice or equinox, I go through a ritual in which I clip my body hair until my body is well groomed. In Volume Two of "In The Heat Of Passion" is an erotic short story which is, oddly enough, titled "The Ritual" which is a version of this ritual I perform. I like hairy men as much as anybody, but even more, now I like to take out my clippers when I take on a hirsute man for the evening. I turn it into a ritual of sacrifice. If he can get into it, many won't they feel like the biblical Samson, you can have yourself a good time. If nothing else don't tell him until you have put the cuffs on him. # 24 HYGIENE IN THE PLAY AREA In preparing for sex, the playroom and toys should be made as hygienic as an operating room. Give yourself plenty of time to accomplish this. Toys should be sprayed with a product like Germ-Gon, #4("Germ-Gon" is a product by a Gay manufacturer and distributed to Gays in response to the crises. At $6.00 for 4 ounces it smacks of opportunism)#5, or, as a much cheaper alternative, soaked in a solution of household bleach (hydrogen chloride) and water in a ratio of 6 parts water to 1 part bleach. As far as efficacy is concerned there is nothing better than bleach. Let the toys air dry, preferably in the sun. Warming the toys in a microwave (be careful you could reduce latex toys to lumps), or a dishwasher, is better than warming them in water. Moisture and warmth breeds germs. This includes leather toys, straps and wraps. Sustained temperatures around 140 degrees, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, bleach, "Germ-gon", "Wet Ones", and others definitely kill all harmful germs when properly applied. Wash all linen in the bleach or Germ-Gon solutions. You might want to add the detergent used in most dishwashers to rid the linen of grease and the rancid smell of old grease. An alternative to linens is disposable paper towels or better yet "Wet Ones" "Wet Ones", "Chub's" and a multitude of other brand names are disposable towels that are moistened with a solution that contains nonoxynol 9. Use a "Wet One" to wipe off the dildo just before insertion, or the condom covered cock before insertion, or any number of other things to be inserted into the body. Using a "Wet One" is simply another precaution. These products are found in almost every market and drug store.. Keep a plastic bag lined trash can in the play area or a paper market bag that can be thrown out. When drying linen expose them for longer than necessary to dry them in the dryer or out doors. Excessive heat and ultra-violet light destroys germs. If the toys are old, have wires in them, or have sharp cutting edges that may draw blood, throw them out. Buy safe new toys. We all have a disposable income, dispose of it in the drug store, the leather store, or "Pleasure" store near you. It once could be said that "Richard Locke is a cheap fuck". Not anymore. I spent $40.00 on my last trip to the drug store. There are no more cheap fucks. Cheap fucks, sleaze, dark orgy rooms, long finger nails and any number of other things from the past IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 25 are, in the words of Margaret Mitchell; "Gone with the Wind". We can all be AIDS preventive by proper nutrition and vitamin supplements, with proper hygiene in our daily as well as our sexual lives, with plenty of rest and exercise. Even so, the healthiest of bodies can be infected with this dread disease and succumb. Therefore it is best not to become infected as well as keeping a healthy body. It always comes back to DISEASE INTERRUPTUS. ENJOY THE HEAT OF PASSION For many of us, when we get horny, we go out on the street, to the bar, or to the bath-house and have sex. Spontaneity has been our byword. For the past three years I have tried something that is reminiscent of high school. I have made dates. Besides showing people that I belong to a tribe my white hankie tells people to "make a date". I even made dates with Allan, my lover. There are many rewards for making dates. Anticipation prior to the date can make for very horny encounters. Hygiene is assured because the time is there to prepare the space. If you plan for heavy, long play encounters you can also plan for time to recuperate and rest after the encounter. Making a date reveals the intention of your partner, especially if you are stood up. It puts a little romance into the act. Making dates promotes low-risk activity. Spontaneity encourages high-risk activity. But if street sex pushes your buttons, scrub down and take a condom and "WET ONES" with you. Keep a sex diary, or a calender with the address and phone number and something about what you did with those persons. Hopefully there won't be a need to contact them, but if there is you will have the ability. The sex diary will make for interesting reading , maybe even a few good jack-off sessions. These suggestions of good, common sense can take high-risk activity into safer areas. If multiple sex contacts are part of your being; today "they" call it being sexually compulsive, yesterday it was called being a pig, before that you were sleaze, (we have come a long way) join a jerk-off club, or a club with your "specialty" (see the appendix for the special club for you). If the membership is closed then form a new club. Think of the club as a tribe of men who are similarly inclined to have low-risk sex. It is a great place to meet men who care about their own health and the health of others. "Being selective" will certainly not save your life as the safe sex guidelines would have you believe. In fact, being selective without playing sensibly can surely kill you: but being sensible can reduce risk. Since the crux of sensible sex is risk reduction what better place to meet a person of "like mind" than at a J/O club. # 26 At the San Francisco Jacks, everyone is nude so at least you know what they have swinging. It is very strange how "macho images" and limp wrists melt away when men take off their clothes and put themselves in sexual situations. At one of my seminars a Person With AIDS pointed this phenomenon out to me. I had, in all my years, never noticed. The next visit to the San Francisco Jacks I sat near the lockers and watched this phenomenon. He was right. Suggest a "couples night" and bring a friend to engage in low-risk exhibitionism. These clubs are yours to guide in the directions you would like to see them go. Lights and mirrors, videos, and stages for live performances can make your club an ideal setting for wonderful encounters. If, as I said, multiple sex contacts are a part of your being remember that multiple, repeated exposures vastly increase the likelihood of infection from AIDS so take care to INTERRUPT THE TRANSMISSION OF DISEASE WITH EVERYONE YOU HAVE CONTACT WITH. If you belong to a club that is also a business, a bathhouse, a gloryhole, or other type of sexual encounter business and it is not being responsive to the crises, if it doesn't give or sell prophylactics, has no shower facilities, is dark and dingy then talk to the management and make them responsive to our needs. It is our membership fees and our dollars at the door that keep them in business. It is our club too. In San Francisco the Walgreen's Drug Store at Castro and 18th Streets has responded to the crises by making a prominent display with microbicide, condoms, and lubricants in the store at reasonable prices. Some lubricants have a spermicide. Nonoxynol 9 is the active ingredient and has shown not only that it is a spermicide (vaginal foams), but a virucide. When used properly nonoxynol 9 kills herpes and other STD's as well as LAV. A very new lubricant "RUB" contains over 5% nonoxynol 9. Nonoxynol 9 is very similar in make-up to "Oxydol" laundry detergent, For further information refer to the chapter on nonoxynol 9. The other drug store in the area, Pay'n Save, responded by raising the price of their "Fourex" condoms from $16.95 to $24.95. Some people will want to make a fast buck while others will want their customers to return. "Fourex" is the brand name of a condom made from a sheep's gut. I blew one up and tacked it to the wall and for 16 weeks it remained turgid. If an air molecule can't flow through the gut molecules it is highly unlikely that a virus whose atomic make-up is larger than that of an air molecule will pass through either. IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 27 In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle Dr. Marcus Conant used this same analogy 7 months after he heard me use it in a seminar with the American Cancer Society. I strongly urge that a "Fourex" condom be used and not a cheap latex condom. Blow up a Latex condom to see how long it remains turgid. See for yourself, use your own common sense. For further information refer to the chapter on condoms. You as a customer of the business can direct the course of their business by the way you spend your dollars. These businesses need to be rewarded for their efforts by your patronage. Response to the crises is what you make of it. Your awareness of the crises, your response to the business community is very important. Responsibility lies with you the consumer, you the individual, you who are at risk. In San Diego a leather bar responds to the crises by putting up posters of Uncle Sam who wants "YOU TO WEAR YOUR RUBBERS". I talked with one of the owners of the "Headquarters", its a new bar at 30th and Upas Streets. The owners are using new ideas. They want repeat customers. There are brand new rubber machines in the johns. They don't feel that AIDS is bad for business. They confront their customers and AIDS head on. "The Spike" in New York City had condom machines in June of 1983. One thing I have noticed about this epidemic nobody does anything until someone close to them dies. New York is 3 years ahead of the rest of the country. San Francisco is 2 years ahead. I gave a seminar in Fresno in September of 1985. When I drove into town I saw a billboard that said: "AIDS, until a cure PREVENTION". There were, in fact, twenty such billboards in Fresno. Fresno had an AIDS coalition before there were any People With AIDS in Fresno. And there are those cities who will never catch up. In the "ever popular" resort town of Palm Springs not a word has been spoken or printed about AIDS. Two local Gay papers have been told advertising would be pulled if AIDS is mentioned in the publications. Happily, as of July, 1985, this policy is no longer in effect. Its been a hard lesson. The rate of AIDS infection in Palm Springs is 5 times that of the national average. With 20,000 people with AIDS in an estimated population of 10 million gays the national average is 2 in a 1000 gay men who have the disease. With over 100 people with AIDS out of an estimated 10,000 gay men in Palm Springs (Palm Springs Life Magazine May 1984 estimated 20,000 Gay and Lesbian persons in the Palm Springs area, half of which are gay men). The statement "5 times the national average" is not unrealistic. # 28 While the Gay Community of Palm Springs is worried about losing "tourist dollars" there are some businesses like the "RHINOCEROS CAFE" (See appendix) which gives condoms with the check. One Palm Springs business owner told me that his $600,000 business was more important than AIDS education. As of June 1986 his $600,000 investment has not cured him of AIDS. "THE ACADEMY" on Market Street in San Francisco gives a condom and a card with instructions on "safe sex" with the locker key. It also has clean showers. "THE PINES" in Seattle is currently being renovated to reflect the "new times". They are making time and space available for a Jack Off club. "THE F STREET HEALTH CLUB" in San Diego gives out a condom with lubricants with their keys. The emphasis at this club is health and while not required to POLICE their club subtle enforcement is present. There are many more businesses that are beginning to change the style. They realize that a business with a 1979 attitude will die. Its 1986, and slowly business attitudes of thirty years are changing. They have realized that AIDS is preventable. When they finally raised their heads from the sand and looked about at their fellows, still with their heads in the sand, all they saw were assholes. When entering into a new relationship with someone, sensible sex should be adhered to for "at least 18 months" (Allan and I would have had 18 months together on October 1, 1984. He died on June 21, 1984) which is the least amount of time suspected of being the incubation period for AIDS. It can range up to 15 years by the latest estimate. This is quite an investment of time with one person. I suspect that this kind of rein pulling will be difficult. It takes patience, trust and honesty in the relationship to accomplish this monumental feat. Jealousy in a relationship only leads to lying. Lies, like darkness, breeds disease. The T- rooms and the bushes are filled with "monogamous lovers". Sex outside the relationship still has to be sensible. This is a modified monogamy. For those unwilling to take the antibody test, the risk of getting AIDS with a monogamous relationship is great. A friend who had four partners in his lifetime, one of which was his wife, was completely monogamous. His last partner committed suicide IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 29 six months prior to my friend's diagnosis. He was also from a low risk area, Portland, Oregon. The guidelines which tell you that monogamy is safe is killing people. My friend died in April of 1986. In one community meeting of the AIDS board someone asked, "how can we protect ourselves from People With AIDS who are having sexual encounters in the community?" The answers from the individuals in the group ranged from "String them up" to "banish the bastards". My answer to the question was that an educational program showing people how to have sensible sex would protect the community. I also said "What about the person who is incubating AIDS?" We don't even know who he is. Sensible sex will protect you from that person as well as the person with AIDS. We are all at risk, and at high risk if we take no precautions. If sensible sex techniques are adhered to there is nothing to fear, in fact People With AIDS can and do have sexual encounter. The pamphlet referred to in the dedication was written by two men, who have AIDS, in their need for sexual gratifications. I have given over a hundred copies of "How to Have Sex In An Epidemic" out to people. People with AIDS need love too. Give it to them sensibly. In June of 1985 I went to the Beach Area Community Clinic in San Diego and was found to be clean. In February 1896 I took the antibody test and proved to be positive. Since I have played sensible since early 1983 I must have become antibody positive in 1982 or even before. Allan, before he died, told me he was happy about playing sensibly as he knew he hadn't spread the disease. Other than being antibody positive I have not had a sexually transmitted disease in over 5 years. I attribute this clean bill of health to luck for the first two years and the last 3 years to sensible sex techniques. These techniques may have saved me from a full blown case of AIDS by not overtaxing my immune system with one more infection. According to a BACC questionnaire I am at a very high risk. Their form does not consider prophylactic sex when determining risk. The form needs to confront this issue. It is the responsibility of us as individuals in the community to protect ourselves and then to make the community at large aware of disease transmission. The social and business leaders in the Gay community have to make available the information that is there. In the end it is ourselves who have to calm our hysteria and then to castigate those who don't acknowledge that there are problems. # 30 I have heard a few comments that I would like to share. "I have a healthy attitude and don't have a deathwish." "I'm celibate." "The sluts deserve it." "There is no escape, so I'm going to enjoy myself while I can." "I have a monogamous relationship so I'm not at risk." Most of this kind of hysteria is very illogical, AIDS is a deadly disease. It does exist. It has physical properties. Some day there may be a cure. However that day has not arrived. AIDS IS PREVENTABLE. We know that. It is simply a matter of "HOW" we conduct ourselves. I caught hepatitis in 1970 in a monogamous relationship. Athletic, healthy, happy, people have caught AIDS. A man I knew in New York was celibate for four months and threw himself off a building. One man told me that AIDS was caused by guilt, he had spent 10 years in a seminary so he must know what guilt is. There is an "escape" from hysterical thinking. Its called sensible sex. Rather than mourning the old ways, I am looking forward to the new ways. Ways in which health, quality relationships, happiness and a great deal of satisfaction are "di rigueur". More and more I'm finding that there really is nothing to mourn. A life that is free of disease is the present and future for me. The low-risk sexual activities that follow have banished the evil on our midst. RISK REDUCTION AND MORALITY Jerry Falwell thinks that cock sucking is an ugly sex act. Its non-procreative. If performed by a woman it is a safe (only with regard to pregnancy, otherwise it is very high risk for STD's) way to get your rocks off and is very acceptable to most, unless its done by a man, then it becomes ugly. But to many Gays cocksucking is pure ecstacy. In ancient times relationships between two men, sometimes older to younger, was perfectly acceptable in that time and place and circumstance. Today, to many straights, and to some gays, these same relationships fall into the category of ugly sex acts much in the same manner as the Jerry Falwells who consider anything besides the missionary position to be ugly. Witness the vilification heaped upon NAMBLA. In other words what is acceptable to some is not acceptable to others. In time, place and circumstances sex acts become a problem of morality. What is beautiful and ecstatic to one is IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 31 ugly to another. If morality could be predicated on theft rather than sex, honor over dishonor, love rather than hate, it would be a better world. But it is not so we have to deal with bigotry in all its forms. I bring this to our attention because there are people engaged in what some call ugly sex acts, that are not ugly; that, from the standpoint of disease transmission are more sensible than the traditional homosexual act. All sex acts are beautiful, ecstatic, godly acts of divine closeness to the purpose of being. "LIVE! LIVE! LIVE! LIFE IS A BANQUET AND MOST POOR SUCKERS ARE STARVING TO DEATH 18 NATURE'S GIFTS The largest organ of the body is the skin. The skin provides protection from outside organisms that could enter the body, and thus is the first line of defence from disease. The immune system is the second line of defence. The skin has nine openings in it to accommodate the ears, nose, mouth, eyes, urinary tract and anus. Around these openings are natural protection from invaders. The eyes have lashes and brows to catch dust, and tears #4(Salty tears can kill millions of germs. The LAV virus found in tears was most probably dead as was the virus found in saliva. This virus is very fragile and finds it difficult to find a healthy environment. This is the reason that the transmissibility of the virus is confined to blood to blood and semen to blood)#5 to wash away intruders. Earwax and hair keep invaders out of the ears. Mucous and hair keep the nostrils clear of intrusion. Saliva and lips protect the mouth. Saliva, tears, earwax and mucous contain micro-organisms that also attack invaders. In our anus and our urinary tract these same kinds of micro-organisms attack invaders that enter through those openings. With sexual activity, we often times bypass the natural barriers in our bodies. Our first line of defence is useless when there is penetration into cavities. It's much like sticking a hypodermic right into the heart of our bodies. Our second line of defence is our immune system which searches out, identifies the invader, then attacks it. A good healthy body with the immune system intact can withstand repeated infectious assaults only so long before the defenses become # 32 weakened. The result is AIDS. This is the "Overload Theory" by Dr. Sonnenbend who wrote the "Introduction" to "How to Have Sex In An Epidemic". Above all, to reduce risk, we must keep to a minimum those organisms which enter our body through the orifices. A condom covered cock is more sensible than one that is not because emissions will be kept outside the penetrated body. Less sensible is a cock that has penetrated a cavity. The skin, like the penis and anus, is a sex organ. A hand drawn over the skin can bring shudders of sexual excitement. It is a very responsive sex organ. At the top of the list is "Do have sex with the same partner." If I had only had sex with Allan I'd be dead. He would have pumped me full of AIDS every time we hit the sack. At the top of the don't list is "Don't have sex with many partners." If I have cut my sex partners from 20 a week to only 5 and one of the five has 20 partners a week, what have I gained? Absolutely nothing. It is not who you do. IT'S HOW YOU DO IT. "A history of sexual contacts with many different partners and of receptive anal intercourse or needle 'sharing' by IV drug users have been shown to more effectively discriminate between those with and without AIDS." 20 Sport fucking with many different partners exposes one to repeated infection of not only AIDS but all the other sexually transmitted diseases. It is prudent to protect yourself and those you contact. Anything else is irresponsible, selfish, deadly behavior. It's not sport fucking in any sense. As a sport fucker, when you encounter irresponsible behavior it is your duty to yourself, to him, and to your fellows to put a stop to it. Sport fucking, in a responsible manner, is what I call modified polygamy. # 34 LYMPHADENOPATHY ASSOCIATED VIRUS OR LAV Up to this point you may have noticed I have referred to the AIDS virus as LAV. The reason I have done this is as follows. "THE NEW SCIENTIST" a British scientific journal has published two articles charging Robert Gallo, the U.S. scientist, who named a virus HTLV-III, with fraud. It boils down to the fact that on July 17, 1983 Montagnier from the Pasteur Institute in Paris gave to Gallo the LAV virus that Montagnier had discovered in January of 1983. On March 30, 1984 Gallo gave the world a (new) virus called HTLV-III with no genetic variation between it and LAV. The ramifications not most apparent from all this is the fact that all research in the U.S. on the LAV (HTLV-III) virus must be personally authorized by one man, Robert Gallo. Robert Gallo is thought to be the confidant of Ronald Reagan and Patrick Buchanan. 21 With this kind of triumvirate, research is at a standstill. No money (Ronald Reagan holds the purse strings), no virus (Robert Gallo holds the virus) equals homophobia (Patrick Buchanan). In June of 1986, the French lost their lawsuit, which basically put them outside the profits to be made by the discoverer of the virus. The profits to be made off the two antibody tests alone are considerable especially since there are several government contracts, the military for instance, for the tests already. The La Rouche amendment in California, if passed by the voters, would mean the number of kits sold in California would be equal to the whole population of California and would be included in those profits. While we should STOP LA ROUCHE we should ANNIHILATE GALLO. I wonder if Reagan and Buchanan have a piece of the pie. The antibody test can be useful to us who are at risk while it remains anonymous. When it becomes mandatory, in any way, it becomes the fist of tyranny and the beginning of genocide. I shall continue to call the virus LAV because Gallo is a fraud and the HTLV III or the HIV designation is one more step in the direction of genocide. Meanwhile, as of July 1986, over 20,000 people have AIDS, 10,000 of which have already died and a million or more have been exposed to one of the worst epidemics of the 20th century. The Human Immunodeficiency (HIV) designation is simply to mollify Gallo's critics. Part of the solution to the problem of HTLV III -LAV -ARV was to change the name. The AIDS virus is now known has HIV "Human Immune deficiency Virus." IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 35 Before we get into "the-doing-of-it-sensibly", there are a few more things to say. Like Hepatitis there are carriers of the AIDS virus that may or MAY NOT become ill. If you are that person you will be saving lives by playing sensibly, by protecting people from your ill health. Sensible sex is not anything that any one of you is incapable of figuring out on your own. I have stressed "good common sense" for many reasons. Buckminster Fuller, who designed the geodesic dome, calls good common sense "apriori knowledge", or that ability that we are all born with to deduce from the information available; to use reason. Scientists are using the "scientific method" (look it up the encyclopedia) of experiment and experience to find a cure. All that is needed is good common sense to PREVENT THE DISEASE. There will be no scientists in bed with us when we do the things that put us at risk. I reiterate, we ourselves are individually responsible for what we do. Think about what you do before you do it. I am a raging optimist. I see the solution to AIDS as being within ourselves, individually. It is a do-it-yourself world. To wait for the government, the scientist, the church, or society to do it for you is complete folly. # 36 PART II: "THE `DOING' OF SENSIBLE SEX" "With a disease such as prostatitis many physicians recommend that the person `Try to have as many ejaculations as possible'. Since the virus is spread through semen it stands to reason that quantity ejaculations would help to deplete the antibody positive person's virus colony. I therefore recommend as many ejaculations a day that can be had. At least once in the morning and as many thereafter through the day as possible.Take advantage of that morning hard-on." A good project for someone who wants to be given a government grant. Sometimes i strap the "Fourex" on with a leather strap or thong. The strap I use is about 8 feet long and an inch wide. It can be had from "Mr. S Leathers", "Hard Labor", or "Mercury Distributing", mail order houses (See appendix for the addresses). It is the same strap that use for ball fucking. Spit and trauma are a bad combination. Use lots of lubricant, preferably with nonoxynol 9 and a good condom. Unless you are into pain, refer to the section on S/M. There are many ways to be macho as well as many ways to be stupid. "You pays your money and you takes your choice." The mouth is a wonderful sex organ. Until I discovered my asshole, I only used my mouth on cocks. I feel I have become an adept cocksucker. In fact when fag-basher yells "cocksucker" at me I can only reply, "you would be too, if you tried it just once, bastard." I love my holes. Cocksucking, though, can be dangerous. I have never received clap in my mouth even though its said that it can be done. Some people say that the micro-organisms and the gastric juices (they do digest filet mignon) of the stomach are protective. Canadian scientists have done a study and seem to feel that oral sex is safe from the transmission of LAV. What about CMV and EBV? Canadians and very few others are concerning themselves with other viral infections that are transmitted by oral sex. Whether it is safe, or not, there is still a debate. Being antibody positive I am not willing to risk my life over the outcome of such a debate. If you have bleeding gums, or you have just brushed your teeth, before or after oral sex, you have put yourself at high risk. Use hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash. Once, after getting loaded on a joint, I couldn't remember if I had swallowed the IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 41 peroxide after gargling. Hydrogen Peroxide is extremely dangerous. When swallowed, you will have to contact a poison control center immediately. Please use care. A new mouthwash called "OXYFRESH" that contains a compound called chlorine dioxide is very safe. Chlorine dioxide is a compound consisting of one chlorine atom attached to two nascent oxygen atoms. As with hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide's ("OXYFRESH") oxygen atoms kill anaerobic organisms, those micro-organisms that only live in the absence of oxygen. These mouthwashes should be used before as well as after oral sex. Even if you have been prudent and a condom was used, gargle with the peroxide or the "OXYFRESH". I never used a mouthwash of any kind in my life, now I use "OXYFRESH" as part of my daily hygiene. Once I spent over $5.00 for a special mouthwash for bleeding gums that was recommended by a pharmacist. It didn't work. A friend recommended a $1.00 bottle of peroxide and my problem was solved. This was my first experience with Oxygen as an antiseptic, which helped in the acceptance of the chlorine dioxide compound in a product known as "Dioxyclor". Dioxyclor can be found at "Au Naturel" on Market Street or by contacting American Biologics (see appendix for both companies). Dioxyclor led me to "OXYFRESH". All three of these oxygen compounds work well as an antiseptic mouthwash before and after oral sex. Bleeding gums can be very dangerous. Semen can enter through trauma making the receiver, bottom, at high risk for AIDS. Blood can be received into the inserter, top, through the urethra making the inserter at high risk. It's difficult to go into a dark orgy room and look at peoples gums as if you where buying a horse. Is it worth the risk? One thing about a dark orgy room is that peer pressure doesn't work, no one can see that its you. One rationalization; "Men have been going to the baths for centuries and epidemics didn't rage through them." The Greek and Roman baths are held to good example. I have never been to the baths of Caracalla, but I have seen pictures. I have yet to see an American bath house compare. Disease did rage through the populace. In that world, as in this world, one did not necessarily get "it" at the baths. The every day person was not exempt, and more than one Roman Emperor died of a syphilitic brain. Your "station in life" does not make one immune to disease. Ancient codes became moral positions. For instance Jewish people don't eat pork because people learned that eating pork caused trichinosis. It evolved into the orthodoxy of the Jewish Religion. Sex epidemics did rage. Marriage and monogamy became a part of the orthodoxy. Not eating pig and saving oneself for a future mate saved one from disease. # 42 Darkness breeds disease, its very high risk. It's not where you do it. It's how you do it. Turn on the lights. My over weight friend says, "Well, some of us don't look good in the light." I say, "Maybe the light would encourage you to look better." COCKSUCKING Wear a condom when getting your cock sucked. Put a condom on him when sucking his cock. I know that latex tastes bad, unless your a rubber freak, but there is a product put out by the "Oxyfresh" manufacturers that contains the Chlorine Dioxide compound that freshens the taste of latex, it's called Purogel. "Oxyfresh" and "Purogel" are sold by the advertiser on the page opposite to the page on chlorine dioxide. I have a friend who is utterly terrified that he will die choking on a condom (I wonder how the obituary would read). I use a "Fourex" that has been washed. The "Fourex" is packaged in aluminum foil or a liquid that is positively the worst taste ever. I then rub Purogel or something that tastes good, chocolate syrup, or even whipped cream on it. Sucking a covered cock can cause throat burn so always use a good (and tasty) lubricant. I swallow my saliva and try not to spread it around. If you must suck a cock without a rubber, make sure the man doesn't have a lot of precome fluid during foreplay. If he does have copious amounts of precome the risk factor could be very high. Don't swallow and spit often into a receptacle. Glory hole businesses would do well to place spittoons in their booths. Of coarse you have just raised your risk. In December of 1985, Doctor Conant and Doctor Levy, the discoverer of ARV, (AIDS Related Virus is a third genotype of the AIDS virus. Doctor Gallo wouldn't give Doctor Levy the HTLV-III virus to do research. Doctor Levy had to isolate the virus IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 45 himself. By the way, the genotype of ARV is quite different from the LAV (HTLV-III). ARV could be said to be the distant cousin of the LAV and the HTLV-III.) published their research concerning the efficacy of condoms in preventing the transmission of the virus. Five types of condoms were used. All condoms were successful in preventing the transmission of the virus. Condoms are safe when properly used. Scum bags are exactly that. It was one of my saddest days there as I realized that this man had never known the beauty of gay sex. It had been a deep dark secret to his family, to his friends, and most importantly,to himself. I wonder if this kind of self denial is the basis for the drug and alcohol abuse in the gay community. Is this abuse used to bolster our egos? To make us forget that we are fags? I'm not # 48 a shrink so I'm not qualified to say but in my opinion I think that much of the abuse we do to ourselves is only a part of the abuse heaped on us by an ugly, immoral society. The June 1986 Supreme Court decision concerning sodomy only proves how ugly and immoral this society can be. I'm gay and proud. I know that in the period of my life when I abused myself, and drugs, it was only the reflection of the much larger abuse I received from my boss, my co-workers (some of whom were also gay), from my family (some of whom were also gay), and society in general. In California, state law delegates that what consenting adults do in private is their own business. I don't advocate the use of any drug; I only ask that you concern yourself with lowering risks. If you use needles don't use used needles, no matter what. If you use drugs use them at home, make a date and use good common since. If you use good common since you won't do it. I left San Francisco in 1973 because my friends and I were dying or dead of drug abuse; some of my friends are still killing themselves with drugs. Drugs are a part of our lives from aspirins and coffee to over the counter drugs and underground drugs. You are the responsible person in your life, for everything that you do. You are the consenting adult. With AIDS in our lives, drugs become even more dangerous than ever before. The scientists are finding in their investigations that there are co-factors at work with LAV. It is unknown what co-factors are important, or what relationship the co-factors represent. If the co-factors are the key then we may very well be at very high risk. A co-factor could be repeated exposer to LAV (many different partners without the protection of prophylactic measures), stress due to an 18 hour work day, bad diet, not enough rest, diet cola (non-nutritive foods), and/or drugs, in combination or by themselves, or any number of other things, including genetics. If drugs are involved then all drugs should be kept to a minimum. Sexual acts can be enhanced by the use of drugs. One drug (actually a herb), relatively safe, is "YOHIMBE". Please before using Yohimbe refer to the caution in the section on Yohimbe. Yohimbe is an aphrodisiac made from the bark of a tree native to West Africa. Yohimbe cost $14.00 an ounce and is great for keeping a hard on. The FDA tested it and said there is no aphrodisiac action. I tested it and feel the FDA should have IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 49 tried it on themselves for a proper test. It works. I use it all the time and love it. There seems to be no untoward (unless you didn't read the caution). The FDA didn't report any either. The effects of the drug lasts about four hours. I bought Yohimbe at a health food store called, "AU NATURAL" (See appendix) on Market Street in San Francisco. It can also be bought in San Diego at "National Health Foods", 435 University Ave., see Joseph Hurley. It can be found on your person, in your house, or in your car and you won't go to jail. If you are in the Armed Forces and its found in your urine during a spot check, it's OK, your home free. The dosage is 1/4 teaspoon for a raging hard on. Whether it is physical or psychological I don't care, it works. There are other drugs, for instance, "Flagyl", an often misprescribed drug for amoebic dysentery, that are poisons. To get rid of amoebas one begins to poison oneself. It is better not to get amoebas to begin with, by using sensible sex techniques, than it is to poison oneself and take the risk of having that co- factor bring on AIDS. There is much more to be said about drugs but I don't feel qualified to get into it. Drugs, prescription or otherwise, can be lethal or recreational. Please use your good common since. Alcohol is another matter. More people in the Gay community have and will die of alcoholism than will ever die of AIDS. It has been to long recognized as a human failing. Too long has it been a matter of morality. Alcoholism is a disease, can be treated, and death can be prevented. At the same time alcohol can be a matter of taste, a great wine for dinner, or a great beer for a thirst quencher (Budwieser beer is made from only five natural ingredients; it contains no chemicals that could be co-factors), or an after dinner brandy or cognac. Alcohol and beer are diuretics. It makes you piss. Beer at an orgy is a low risk activity because frequent pissing flushes the urethra with a harsh acidic urine. WATERSPORTS Watersports can be one of the lowest risk activities there can be. A Bathtub, plastic sheets, the backyard at midnight can all be a place of frequent waves of warmth washing the night into morning. KEEP IT EXTERNAL. There is four times as much cytomegalovirus in semen as there is in urine, but there are quarts more urine than there is semen. Suck the suds; beer, not the urine. The only time I suggest the use of latex condoms is # 50 for pissing. They make great water balloons. Aim below the head and make sure to scrub well after watersports. NONOXYNOL 9 I want to report on some investigations that I got interested in when I talked with the pharmacist at Walgreen's Drugstore in San Francisco. It seems that ever since the Bay Area Reporter reported that the active ingredient in vaginal foams, NONOXYNOL 9, kills the LAV virus, Herpes and a few others, as well as amoebas, the store is hard out to keep the foam on the shelf, There has been a twenty-five percent increase in the sale of foams. With this news I began to investigate. I found a paper by Clark Taylor, Ph. D., titled "AIDS Prevention and Non-ionic surfactants". The paper is very informative. I found several Gay products, "Foreplay" and "Rub" with nonoxynol 9 in it. Both were far and away the cheapest products on the market. That is the good news. Since "Foreplay" is a gel, it's not as effective as the foam because of the difference in application and the small amount of nonoxynol 9, "Foreplay" has only about 1%. The newest product "Rub" has over 5% nonoxynol 9 and is a cream with a water soluble base making it more effective than "Foreplay" but probably less effective than the foam. I also found that if improperly administered nonoxynol 9's efficacy is unknown. Properly administered and used with a condom the efficacy approaches 99%. At the same time I know a woman who got pregnant using the spermicide. More bad news is that there have been no studies on the anal use os nonoxynol 9, as an AIDS preventative or in carcinogenic studies of absorption into the anal canal. With all this in mind, I say; use it. Getting cancer at age 60 seems preferable to AIDS today. And if improperly used it is still more effective than nothing. This is all new to me. Enough is known about nonoxynol 9 to consider it a definite AIDS preventative. I have used "Rub" as an anal lubricant. I liked it and recommend it. For those of you who have used a vaginal foam, "Rub", or "Foreplay" we all would like to hear from you. This is all so new that there is no information other than Dr. Taylor's. Since the first edition we have more information. Refer to "THE LANCET', December, 21/28 1985, pg. 1422,or "BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL', October, 26, 1985, pg. 1196. IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 51 It could help immensely if the Gay users of vaginal foams would step forward and let the rest of us know how you liked it. I have only used "Rub". It is an inexpensive nonoxynol 9 compared to the $10 for the 4 ounce foam. But, as well, it has a water soluble base with a high viscosity. It is important to have a lubricant lubricate. There are many who feel that a water based lubricant is OK. After personally feeling gummed up with a water base lube I vote for vegetable based lubes. In jacking off one day I saw my come interact with "Rub" and nonoxynol 9. The thick come turned immediately watery and slick. since nonoxynol 9 is related to "Oxydol" (tm) it reacts like soap. When a drop of soap is dropped upon the surface of water, the water molecules begin to spread out. You can make the test and see for yourself. HANDBALLING There has been quite a lot not said about fisting. Cock suckers and ass fuckers have received guidelines and risk reduction techniques, but not the fisters. "They" say that "fisting is extremely dangerous". They say this not so much from the standpoint of disease transmission, but from the standpoint that fisting is an ugly sex act. Handballing or fisting is non-mucous sex (unless you happen to be jerking off with cock and hand inside his ass, which is extremely dangerous). Minute or even large trauma and semen is a bad combination. IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 55 But handballing, from the standpoint of disease transmission, is as sensible as anal intercourse with condoms. This is predicated upon the idea that there is no bleeding, or trauma to receive micro-organisms. If you have a cut on your hand don't stick it in somebody's butt. Don't come in somebody's rectum ever. A thorough body scrub, especially the hands, nails, and arms as if you were a surgeon ready to do surgery is required for minimum hygiene. Use a lubricant dispenser, such as an automotive grease gun filled with your favorite lubricant; no "double dipping" into the same Crisco can. Use separate cans and label them with the names of the people involved. Limit yourself to low or no drug intake, so that the bottom is aware of his limits. Have a sensitive partner who cares about your's and his own health. If this is accomplished there is little to no risk of disease transmission. Handballing can be suicidal and homicidal, or a reflection of the two, depending on the people who engage themselves in the activity. It can also be a healthful, recreational, sport fuck. It really boils down to the two or more people involved in it. It can be mind-boggling for the top as well as the bottom as you reach the limits of the activity. It can be religious. It can be exactly what you want it to be. Before I started handballing my asshole seemed always to be either going into or coming out of a hemorrhoidal stage. My problems began when I was in the army as a tank mechanic. I had to sit on cold steel to do my work. In and around that are the perineum muscles which pump blood into the cock. # 56 The blood is stored in a pocket beside these muscles. This pocket of blood can be hemorrhaged very easily and the reason that handballing can be very dangerous. People can bleed to death very quickly if this pocket is ruptured. The anal canal is a mucous membrane that is also very resilient and can be stretched and trained just as the sphincter can be trained. This membrane, if scratched while it is stretched, can pop and tear just as a balloon can be popped; therefore it can be a very dangerous area. With all this danger in handballing, it is not to be attempted by people who haven't trained themselves. Climbing mountains is dangerous but not impossible. So is handballing. You have to have the knowledge and the tools to do both. Handballing can be done with surgical gloves, available at your nearest pharmacy, if that is your choice, but there is a case for gloveless handballing as well. I think that tactile response should remain intact for penetrating handballing. With the danger that is involved, this response is crucial for sensible handballing. If one squeezes a lime on his finger tips the pain from an opening in the skin will tell him how to use that hand. In handballing if there is no opening in the skin there is no way that disease can be transmitted from one to the other. There can be no fluid contacts with handballing when done properly. Some people, from the standpoint of disease transmission, feel safer using gloves. With gloves the fingernail ends are smoother and trauma from sharp nails is reduced. It is a matter of choice and common sense. 69 Handballing can be very dangerous as there is grease everywhere. If this kind of session is attempted be neat and have everything "at hand", so to speak. The "WET ONES", separate lubricants, a bottle of alcohol for quick antiseptic use, an extra supply of gloves and so forth as well as keeping the using hand only on or in the other persons body and off your body will help to keep fluids his own. Doctor Mervyn Silverman, former San Francisco public health director and chairman of the California Medical Association's AIDS Task Force.26 (Mervyn Silverman is the same man who closed the San Francisco bathhouses to halt the spread of Aids.) IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 61 This part of the book deals with the tools of disease prevention. Some of these tools are used prior to infection. Most of these tools are used after infection. For the most part these tools have not been proved by any practical scientific standards. We, the people involved in the use of these tools thus far, feel that their use is imperative to prevent disease or the final resolution of the disease. These tools are for the "Anti-Body Positive Arc/AIDS Person" who wants to close the barn door before all the horses have stampeded out of the barn. To wait for something to happen is to lose valuable time. Time, for these persons, is running short. In effect we are guinea pigging it. I have used every one of the following tools. For the most part they are non-toxic alternatives with little or no side effects when properly and methodically used. Water in high enough doses has proved to be toxic. For some, one or more of these tools may prove to be harmful. Monitoring is essential. Monitoring either by a doctor or an organization like "Project Inform" or by your own cognizance of the effects of these tools must be a priority. Desperation is not motivation. The tools are not given a priority because a faulty liver in one person may not allow for this tool or that tool. A co-factor or complication in one part of the body may preclude the use of one or more of the tools. This is why the monitoring of the use of these tools is essential. But, because dinitrochlorobenzene has been proven in the "guerrilla clinics" in 14 U.S. Cities to work, in most cases, because it is topically applied, because $5.00 worth of "DNCB" is enough to paint the population of San Francisco, because it promises to stand above all the "cures" thus far encountered in our search for the "Magic Bullet" to stop the course of the disease known as AIDS, this part of the book will begin with a cursory look at this drug. # 62 DINITROCHLOROBENZENE DNCB DNCB is a chemical used by Kodak in their photo finishing process. It will cause a high allergic reaction when brought into contact with living tissue. It is very dangerous in its crystal form. The crystals are dissolved in alcohol and added to "Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion". The lotion is then topically applied to the skin. By the time the small amount, 2.4 grams, gets to the skin it has been diluted thousands of times in the process. The crystals themselves therefore are very dangerous. There is a copy of the revised recipe on the opposite page describing the process for making the correct solution. My suggestion is that a qualified chemist do the chemistry necessary to get the solution. The second batch I received was 15 times too strong and I burned myself and a friend, badly. I burned one other person. He was the fourth person I painted. We were using the correct solution. He felt that his immune system was compromised. When we realized he was burned we knew his immune system was in high gear, good news for him but it did cause pain and discomfort for a few weeks. There was no scar. The DNCB reaction will be slight if at all with the first application to a person who is highly compromised. The reaction or lack of reaction is a good indicator of the viability of the immune system. For a person who doesn't want to take the antibody test or see a doctor, who doesn't want his name on a list, but is still concerned about his immune status. A little or no reaction, or a burn will give him the status of his immune system. DNCB then becomes a tool in determining immune status without compromising civil rights. It can be done in your own home, it is legal, it is accurate, there is little to no expense involved, there is absolutely no political or medical involvement. Only you will know the results since you carry out the test yourself. In the appendix is a list of the guerrilla clinics around the country where, with no questions asked, the solution will be given for free to whom so ever may ask. The way DNCB works is as follows: "DNCB is a chemical that affects the body much like poison oak. It penetrates the skin and binds onto protein there, rendering these proteins much more likely to stimulate an immune reaction. In a person who has normal immunity, DNCB causes a rash akin to poison IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 63 oak. The pure chemical is of such strength that it must be diluted almost a thousand times before application.... Usually,a small amount of DNCB (2/15 of one percent) is dissolved in Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion. Sometimes other solutions are used. Once a week, the doctor paints a small patch on the arm, covers it with gauze, and tells the patient to remove the gauze and wash off the DNCB lotion in a certain number of hours. The standard with the intensive care lotion is two hours. In the beginning when the solution was an acetone base the DNCB was washed off after 12 hours. The DNCB should cause a rash to appear on the skin. Patients with a suppressed immune system will not react at first, but everyone tested so far has eventually achieved a reaction. Sometimes the DNCB is painted directly on KS lesions, but usually only after a skin reaction has already been achieved elsewhere." 27 As of October 1986 I have been using DNCB for about four months. As with my encounter with Joe Kramer people pop into my life from God knows where. I was helping Rita Rocket with her Sunday Brunches in Ward 5B of San Francisco General Hospital when I walked into a room where this man jumped into my face and began, very excitedly to tell me about DNCB. He knew me from my work with AIDS, but otherwise he knew very little about me. Since this was not the time nor the place we did brunch. At brunch he, his name is Blaine Elswood, handed me a sheaf of papers totally inundating me into a world of missed opportunities with every newspaper and doctor of any importance in the United States. If we had only 10 Blaine Elswoods working on this disease we wouldn't have this disease to worry about. Two or three times a month I receive updates - sometimes even more often. In a totally new concept and theory about AIDS we find that AIDS is an auto immune disease much like Lupus. Lupus, the ugly stepchild that gets little to no attention, is a disease that for no known reason (one theory is that it is a virus infection) the immune system of the infected person starts to gobble up healthy, non-diseased cells. "This theory states that the high level of 'wrong' antibodies produced by the B cells can begin attacking normal body cells, especially the T cells themselves. The result is a vicious circle--with the T cells unable to control the B cells, and the B cells producing antibodies # 64 which in turn kill T cells. Many independent observations support the auto immune theory: for example, the recent discovery of a new kind of anti-platelat antibody that is specific to AIDS/Arc patients.28 In the four months I have been using DNCB I stopped weekly treatments for about five weeks when I burned myself with the newest solution that was 15 times too strong. In that five weeks the recurrent herpes that had been my lot in life, that I had resigned myself to, had returned. It was then I realized that they had been gone during the time that I had been using DNCB. I began the weekly treatments again by diluting the 2 ounce bottle with a 10 ounce bottle of Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion thus making it the correct 1% solution. Again my herpes vanished and they have yet to return. Good news for people with Herpes, and for people with AIDS complicated Herpes. I had seen my doctor for a chest pain about four months before commencing the DNCB treatment. While I was there I showed him a mole that had been enlarging for the past year. He said it was old age, a very convenient sluff, for, as he told me, I was only allotted 15 minutes with him and as my group insurance assures him of seeing 500 to 600 patients a month he really didn't have time to go into any other ailments that I was presenting him with. He told me my heart was in great condition. And of course no one likes to told about old age when they are in their forties so I shined him on and got out of there. Since commencing the DNCB treatment the enlarging mole has disappeared leaving only a freckle. Since I am anti-body positive my goal is to be anti-body negative. If I never get AIDS I'll never know if the DNCB stopped the AIDS or not. If I do die of AIDS I'll know the DNCB doesn't work. I'm betting on DNCB. With DR. Gallo's prediction that 50% of the Anti-body positives will go on to have an ARC/AIDS condition I know I'm betting my life. Without having Herpes in my life, and without having cancerous moles on my body, I can tell you now that DNCB is not a bad thing to deal with at all. Since I am a very vain person, in my modesty I'll be the last to tell you that, I paint the DNCB on alternate hips so that the circles, which become red, will be beneath my swimsuit. For me this is the only drawback to DNCB applications, I CAN LIVE WITH IT. IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 65 PROJECT INFORM There are several new drugs, ISOPRINOSINE and RIBAVIRIN, coming into the Gay community that I feel are important to discuss. They are both available in Mexico. Isoprinosine kills viruses by boosting the immune system. Ribavirin stops virus replication. There are spectacular results for people with AIDS Related conditions. Much less so for People with AIDS. Newport Pharmaceutical has been designated by the FDA to administer a protocol of "compassionate use" of the drug Isoprinosine. Only 50 People With AIDS are allowed in the program because the cost of the program is prohibitive. Its sold in 78 countries as an antiviral drug, mostly for influenza. It cures a cold. The pharmaceutical companies in this country would loose a lucrative business selling cold remedies that "only" relieve symptoms of a cold. Newport Pharmaceutical has to spend time on this project, taking time from their money making activities to do something in which they, by law, can't make money. They are not thrilled, to say the least. The FDA has tied their hands. Newport is not taking any more doctors requests for ISOPRINOSINE which is also called an IMMUNEPOTENTIATOR. It helps to restore immune response in patients with AIDS Related Conditions (ARC). If you are an active gay male I suggest that you look into Isoprinosine as a part of your AIDS PREVENTION PROGRAM. The recommended dosage of Isoprinosine is 3 grams per day (two 500mg. pills 3 times a day). The duration is to be determined by how you feel about it. Dosage recommended by Newport Pharmaceutical. RIBIVIRIN is still undergoing research as an Anti-AIDS drug. It has been used as a treatment for the flu. It also can be obtained in Mexico. Information can be had at your local AIDS Foundation. This drug has been selected for trials in 10 cities and by 2000 People With AIDS. It shows great promise. Unfortunately the Mexican price has skyrocketed. Publicity in early 1986 created a great demand for the drug. The Mexican government in collusion with ICN Pharmaceutical raised the price from $6.00 for 12 capsules to $20.00 for 12 capsules. To exploit sick people is unconscionable. There is an alternative set up by an organization called PROJECT INFORM which claims a price of $7.90 for 12 capsules plus handling fee. Their address is: # 66 PROJECT INFORM 2336 Market Street, Suite 33 San Francisco, California 94114 As an adjunct or alternative to Ribaviran I recommend you check out a Chlorine Dioxide compound in Part III of this book. We must assume that our exposure to the virus has already occurred, or take the antibody test and know for certain if you are infected. Our actions of today will make a difference tomorrow. Early action may save a life. To wait till a lesion appears may be too late. I strongly urge an immediate Isoprinosine program. A trip to Mexico can be lots of fun, take in a Jaialai game or a bullfight. BORDER CROSSING In the last week of July, 1985 the actor, Rock Hudson, checked into the Pastuer Institute for treatment. It has been said that he knew for a year that he had AIDS. It is ironic that a picture of Rock Hudson with Nancy and Ronald Reagan revealed a KS lesion on the back of Rock Hudson's neck which led to his diagnosis. Ronald Reagan had yet to publicly use the word AIDS. In By-passing the American Medical community Rock Hudson had gone for the best treatment available. My doctor in San Francisco, who died recently of AIDS related illnesses, went to Paris over a year and a half ago. Dr. Art Ullene of "THE TODAY SHOW" in his broadcast to the nation on July 25, 1985 stated that the American medical community was as capable as the French medical community. He was quick to assure the American public of this nations great strides in AIDS Research. And again reassured the public that the disease cannot be contracted by casual means. That the solution to AIDS prevention is monogamy. The AMA can't show us one recovered AIDS patient. My friend who was monogamous is dead of AIDS. Art Ullene is not at risk. He can afford to be magnanimous. In the same week of Rock Hudson's AIDS announcement I had crossed the Mexican border 5 times and escorted 7 people to the FARMACIA. In that same week one person flew in from Atlanta and crossed the border as well. I also saw several other "obvious gays" with the white plastic bags with the pink and white boxes of ISOPRINOSINE. The rush is on. The border is crossed many times into Mexico to buy, without a prescription, a drug that is less innocuous than an aspirin. ISOPRINOSINE is a drug that will knock out various viral diseases, Herpes and the AIDS virus among them. IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 67 Isoprinosine is sold in 78 countries around the United States but not in the United States. Another anti-AIDS drug is RIBAVIRIN. It to is sold around the United States but not inside. In early 1986 Ribaviran was approved to be used with infants with a respiratory problem. It still seeks approval for use in adults with AIDS. There are between 200 and 300 Americans in Paris waiting to get into a program at the Pastuer Institute. The New York Native reported on a study of those People With AIDS who did not seek medical intervention and those who did. Those who did see medical intervention lasted, on the average, 8 months before they succumbed. Those who did not, lasted, on the average, 29 months. The AMA should be under attack, the FDA should be under attack. Sadly they are not. Their position is unconscionable. Is the conspiracy of silence to extend itself to the sacrosanct AMA and the FDA as well? In February of 1986 I participated in a documentary called "BUYING TIME". Three of us crossed the border three times in two days and smuggled Isoprinosine and Ribavirin through US Customs. This was necessitated by the fact that the FDA allows US Customs to "allow" for compassionate use a thirty day supply of these drugs. I have since found out a prescription from a Mexican doctor will allow a six month supply to come across the border. One day after the broadcast on Channel 4 News in San Francisco the President of Newport Pharmaceutical was fired, the stock went from $13.00 a share to $5.00 a share just after the FDA released to the press a letter telling Newport that they were tooting their horn too soon. My friend who had a crossed the border with me was fired from his job when it was reported on that program that he was antibody positive. The Justice Department holds that the firing of people because of a "fear" of AIDS is justifiable. We are being assaulted from all sides. I learned a valuable lesson at the sex hygiene seminar I gave in October of 1985. I had picked up a box of ISOPRINOSINE and began to talk about it. Without considering till later the content of my talk, I rattled out extemporaneously my ideas on aggressive action. It wasn't till later that I added a to these spoken thoughts the following AIDS IS PREVENTABLE. Isoprinosine therapy is a prevention just as a condom is a prevention. We must take individual and collective aggression against this disease. A program of safer sex combined with pharmaceutical aggression against the emergency is demanded of every individual. Collectively we must support our community's organizations with aggressive action. Our community's organizations will have to attack the established political and medical organizations and the bureaucracies to # 68 demand our rights as individuals to seek the treatment of our choice without the aggrandizements of the establishments forcing us into the hands of greedy opportunists. We must no longer say to the establishment "Please sir, may we have some money?",but to say "Give us our money", that money that we have duly given to our government to protect us, that money we have been taxed, that money which is ours. We must also demand autopsies of those of us who have a died through medical intervention to see if they died because of treatments that are toxic to our systems, or whether we died from mal-practice, or simply starved to death with non-appetizing, non-nutritious foods that are combined with therapies that makes milk taste rancid. We must demand that our legislatures act now. We must demand that our elected officials not veto legislation. We can no longer stand by and watch bureaucratic nonsense lead to inadvertent genocide. We must collectively organize, demonstrate, boycott and demand our rights as citizens of this country. Passive resistance is not resistance. And finally we must demand of ourselves to be aggressive against this disease. We have the where-with-all to accomplish this. If we have to cross the border to get our medicine, cross the border. If we have to use a condom, use it. If our neighbor, in the heat of passion, losses control, then we must slap his wrist. Just as an Israeli farmer carries a gun against terror, we must carry an aggressive will. CHLORINE DIOXIDE Chlorine dioxide is something very new in my life, I have a workshop that developed out of my trips to Mexico. It is a workshop called "I HAD AIDS". In this workshop people come together to talk about alternatives to traditional methods of healing. We all have an aggressive will and the need to search for a method that will enable us to become antibody negative. I had found, and shared with the group, information about a product called "Dioxyclor" that Denise Barbarbusian of "Au Natural", a health food store, had called to my attention. The manufacturer was in Chula Vista just across the border from Tiajuana. On the next trip to Mexico I talked with the President of the company for an hour about the chlorine dioxide compound. I was amazed. IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 69 It is very new in the homeopathic market and not enough information is available. I have found out, though, that many municipalities have been using it to purify water for many years. That is about all I know. At the workshop a pair of lovers brought me a new product called "Oxyfresh", a mouthwash, with the chlorine dioxide compound as its base. The company claims it aids in the fight against plaque. Plaque is created by anaerobic micro-organisms. Among this group of anaerobic micro-organisms are CMV, EBV, and LAV. Sublingual (under the tongue) the chlorine dioxide compound enters the blood stream. When swallowed the compound is also absorbed into the blood stream. When swallowed the compound is also absorbed into the blood stream. In the mouth, esophagus and the stomach yeast infections are affected as well. I have used another "Oxyfresh" product "Purogel" successfully on a bad case of athletes foot. Athletes foot is a yeast infection. Another yeast infection that has become venereal in nature is a fungus on the tongue. It is a grey to green coating on the top of the tongue. Approximately one in two gay men in San Francisco have this fungal tongue. Thus far I have heard nothing from medical authorities about this fungus. The "Oxyfresh" controls this fungus very well. The chlorine dioxide compound is very new. All the information is not enough to really make any kind of estimate as to how good it will be in combating AIDS. I'm personally convinced if nothing else it will aid in the symptoms of the disease tremendously. ALOE VERA "ALOE VERA' is grown all over the world and has for centuries been used to heal, anesthetize, and protect wounds. It is God's gift to us much in the same manner that he gave us well witchers. If you don't believe in well witchers you probably won't believe in Aloe Vera and probably won't use it. Whether you believe it will work or not, it does work. The Aloe Vera plant can be grown on a window sill in the kitchen (its great for burns), or in the yard. If you don't grow your own, its available in most health food stores. It costs about $6.00 a quart. Fill an oral syringe of the type used to feed medicine to babies, lubricate the shaft well and insert into the rectal cavity prior to and after anal intercourse. The result is spectacular. I recommend it for constipation, the extra viscosity will help as well as prevent trauma and hemorrhoids. Most health food stores have literature on the history and # 70 origins of Aloe Vera. Check it out its very interesting. "YOHIMBE" Yohimbe is sometimes called a love sacrament. It has been used for centuries in pagan matrimonies. It is a plant in the Rubiaceae family and its botanical name is corynanthe yohimbe. It is found in tropical rain forests. It is a large tree and grows upwards of thirty feet. Many of the local West African tribes use the shavings of the inner bark as a stimulant (plan on being awake for a while) and as an aphrodisiac. It is only used by these tribes for mating rituals. CAUTION Yohimbe is a MAO inhibitor (manamine oxidase). Among the materials which may be dangerous in combination with MAO inhibitors are sedatives, tranquilizers, narcotics and large quantities of alcohol. Any of these will cause hypotensive crises (severe blood pressure drop). Amphetamines, LSD, cocoa, dairy products including aged cheese... any of these will cause hypertensive crises (severe blood pressure rise). It is generally recommended that no other drug be used in combination within a 10 hour period of the use of yohimbe. Yohimbe is similar in effects to MDA. Very mild chills, and spinal shivers may be felt along with a heady dizziness. Visual and aural hallucinations combine with a relaxed feeling and then you become erect. The dosage is 1/4 of a teaspoon in a gelatin capsule, or just on your tongue washed down with a flavorful drink to wash away the taste. Many good things taste bad. Be cautious and have a good time. MICROBICIDES Betadine and Hebiclens are used in hospitals everywhere. I prefer the Betadine as I have seen it used by medical professionals in a number of ways from surgical prep to hydrotherapy. There is a chance of staining white cloth but it seems to wash out well enough. The active ingredient is povidone iodine. The Hebiclens is used mainly for hand washing by medical professionals. "Ward 5 A" at San Francisco General has Hebiclens at every wash stand in the hallways. Going from patient to wash stand to the next patient is necessary to keep from transferring germs from patient to patient. People with AIDS are so open to disease that this caution is very necessary. Hebiclens has a caution on the bottle to keep it out of eyes and ears so I tend IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 71 to think it would not be as good as Betadine which has no precautions. Case studies have shown that no washing at all can spread disease. Washing without soap can also spread disease. Washing with ordinary soap was almost as good as washing with a microbicide, with very little risk of disease transmission. With AIDS in our midst go all the way. Reduce risk to the utmost, use a microbicide. I suggest that it only be used during sexual times. Frequent use caused dry and cracked skin leaving the skin open to disease. DISINFECTANTS There are as many disinfectants as there are bottles under your sink. Any one of them as good as another. When I took the course from the American Red Cross for "House Care For People With AIDS" I was told that there are no disinfectants cheaper. The mixture is 1 part bleach to 6 parts water. Use it on bed linens, towels, and most toys. The mixture can be placed in a bottle sprayer and sprayed on your toys, or soaked with the mixture in a large sink, or place them in the dishwasher and add bleach to the wash cycle. I would test a few things before using bleach on everything. You may be risking your favorite toy. Although thus far I have found no damage to any of my toys, I have found that leather thongs do not last as long. Another disinfectant is GERM-GON. It is made by gays and distributed all around the country. It is a bactericide, fungicide, and virucide. It costs nearly $6.00 for a 4 oz. bottle that is diluted to 4 gallons of water making it about 10 times more expensive than bleach. Some people will want to make a dollar off the crises. "VITAMINS" Vitamins are necessary for good health. One of the reasons international traffic controllers speak English, world wide, is because the English Navy used limes for its sailors to prevent scurvy. The "Limeys" conquered the world and then spread English culture all around the globe. "Mad dogs and Englishmen go out to the noon-day sun". While the rest of the world was taking a siesta the English conquered it. The lime, and English bravado, are responsible for a world culture. Global thinking has replaced local politics. For those who insist that Linus Pauling is a nut I suggest they re-think their mistrust of vitamin C. Modern medicine would # 72 do well the study Linus Pauling's works more closely. They could also study ancient healing methods. The studies combined with modern science could bring about more well people. The Medical world of today could do well by combining the knowledge of medicine men, chiropractic, modern medical science including psychology, and good common sense with elements of nutrition and vitamin therapy to form a new orthodoxy of wellness. The holistic movement is close to this but still has a way to go. The basis for modern medicine is greed. In the Orient a doctor is paid by well patients, the sick ones don't begin paying till they are well. Greed can be used as an incentive to keep patients well. Its Zen, not what you do but how you do it. Greed though is not the totality of the failure of modern medicine. We as patients do more harm than good. Cigarettes, alcohol, hard work and play with little rest, and general destructive behavior by ourselves is responsible for much of our illnesses. We have insurance policies that pay for our illnesses; consequently we have more illness because we don't have to pay for it. Preventative health is not encouraged. Vitamin therapy after the fact can make a dramatic difference. Before the fact vitamins could prevent most illness. There has been a little research into the ramifications of an early diagnosis of AIDS. Like cancer early diagnosis could effect a cure before death has a chance to strike. Jeffrey Laurence M.D. in "American Health Magazine" stated: Then by chance, I learned there might be a point to early diagnosis (of AIDS) after all. There might be a way of overcoming the potent suppressor factor that seemed to be opening the way for the disease of AIDS...... there are a class of substances called antioxidants that in a test tube can block these potent suppressor factors. One is the simple amino acid ALANINE. Others are Vitamin C and E. Put any of these in enough doses in a test tube and they block the suppressor factor so that the cells have a normal immune response. 29 Rather than wait for a "diagnosis", assume now that you are a person with AIDS, don't wait. Tomorrow never comes. I suggest that we all, everyone of us on the planet, take the test for LAV. Early diagnoses of a viral infection could save your life. We are all at risk. Make no mistake about it. Life is more precious than human rights. Life is more precious than your job, your insurance policy or any other reason that many Gay activists give for NOT taking the test. TAKE THE TEST, take it now. It is IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 73 your life at stake. I take a very special set of vitamins called "Brite Years" that includes ALANINE, VITAMIN C and VITAMIN E. I also take zinc. I have heard that People With AIDS have a zinc deficiency. Kelp, high in iodine, is good for capillary dilation. (All the wastes cleaned from cellular activity can be flushed through the dilated system). The set includes high concentrations of VITAMIN B which is good for all around health. NUTRITION I eat nutritious foods which I call baby foods, such as seeds, eggs, fruit, nuts and milk products. I stay away from domesticated meats which have had enormous amounts of tetracycline fed to the animals to protect them from diseases because they are pinned so close together in the feeding lots. These tetracyclines and those fed to us to cure clap for those many visits to the clinics could be co-factors. they are definitely poisons which kill lower life forms and will damage immune systems. Tuna from the sea or other sea foods are untamed, feral foods that offer us clean meat. Stay away from farmed trout, turkey, chicken and beef that has been given massive amounts of tetracycline. Tetracycline suppress the immune system and like pesticides have residues. Residues that can be harmful. Pork needs to be dealt with separately. Belle Glade Florida has two plagues going on at the same time. One is AIDS in the human population. For reasons unknown to scientists Belle Glade, Florida has more cases per capita of AIDS than anywhere else in North America. The other plague, African Swine Fever Virus, has more cases per capita than anywhere else in North America.30 This too is for unknown reasons. Where AIDS is epidemic so also is ASF, except for possibly Europe. Pork is a basic in the diet of all those people with AIDS except possibly those Jewish Persons With Aids. I don't eat Pork or products with Pork. There is no future in Pork Bellies. If there is a cure found for both of these diseases it will be because of the money to be made or lost. The attitude of this country towards People With AIDS has been no more than their thoughts about dead pigs. A national boycott of pig by the Gays and Lesbians as well as Gay restaurants, their families, and their friends would show, if nobody else, the American Farmer how much of the nation is "a # 74 little queer". To hit a little closer to home a boycott of Ronald Reagan's close friends, the Annenbergs, or as they are better known "Mr. and Ms. T. V. Guide" would result in, possibly, a little more action. Jerry Falwell's 800 number had to be closed down because of the phone calls from gay activists. Walter Annenberg's "TV Guide's" # is 800-228-3300. I'm not eating pork as it could be dangerous to my health. I have never read TV Guide, and now I never will. It too could be dangerous to my health. BOYCOTT PORK AND TV GUIDE. Much of the canned beef from Brazil is still pastured beef. The cheap beef of Burger King and Roy Rogers Restaurants is pastured beef. Millions of acres of jungles in Central and South America have been denuded for these pastures. These pastures will soon be areas of devastation. Stay away from diet foods such as diet colas. They have absolutely no nutritive value. Should you become ill a layer of fat will get you through the therapy without dying of starvation. Many of the AIDS deaths are caused by malnutrition. The poisons loaded into their bodies killed the opportunistic diseases, but the side effects which caused appetite loss caused them to starve to death. That washboard stomach in Honcho magazine looks good, but I will take a layer of fat. It is necessary to eat well. If you can't pinch at least an inch you could be in deep trouble should illness strike. Linus Pauling has told us. Dr. Spock has told us. Even the Reader's Digest has articles on how the green, red and yellow vegetables prevent cancer. Yet we still smoke, drink, and eat junk food. And some of us fuck without a condom. Some of us have a button on our forehead that says self destruct. I can think of no other reason. INSURANCE There is an insurance policy for AIDS. It is obvious to People with AIDS that insurance doesn't help. This particular policy is very insensitive to PWA's. Beyond that they are hoping to make money off the hysteria. The insurance company is not gay owned. On May 8, 1970 I was fired from my job as an insurance claims adjuster (representative). I know that insurance companies are in business to make money not to insure your health. This particular policy really gives nothing unless you are on a hospital death bed. There is only one insurance policy for AIDS, and that is a policy of sensible behavior. Nothing else will be as effective. AFTERWARD I have shared with you some of my thoughts, my experiences IN THE HEAT OF PASSION # 75 and a bit of an education about sensible sex activities. Now I want you, the reader, to share with me. I want to use your stories, your experiences and your thoughts. I would like you to write me and give me a "fictionalized" account of your favorite sensible sex act so that I can share them with the rest of the readers. Some have been published in national magazines such as "STALLION" and "NUMBERS". "NUMBERS" still owes me $250.00 for one story. Others are being published for the first time.
